Description:

This course aims to provide an introduction to the field of water resource systems planning and management. A set of case studies and field examples from around the globe will be used to introduce today’s major WRM issues. For one case study, students will be taken through the crucial steps of (i) identifying the management objectives, (ii) identifying the policy alternatives and (iii) identifying the stakeholders.

The foundations of water resources modeling will be introduced and students will get an overview and hands-on experience with a number of water resources systems optimization and simulation modeling tools (e.g., MikeBASIN, WEAP). Basic approaches to modeling ecosystem processes and economic agents will be explored and applied for specific case studies. State-of-the-art single and multi-objective optimization methods will be presented and their application to water resources management will be demonstrated. An overview of multi-criteria analysis and decision support tools will round up the course.
